Better virtual standup shows?

I had a #showerthought idea yesterday. I am just logging this one here as I don’t have the time to build this one. I hope to get to it if I can get some validation. TL;DR: The idea is a virtual open-mic platform where a comic can share his set as a video and people can react to specific jokes by clicking on emojis throughout the delivery. The comic can choose how long they want to get this feedback and get information on what works and what doesn’t. Additionally, depending on the participants, the comic can get demography information to see what works for whom. ...

Netflix & Chill

After a while I found my true netflix and chill combination in the least likely of all the things I have tried – Korean Dramas. And the best part is that I didn’t even spend time picking them out. I just picked the first few recommendations. I am on my third drama now and I am ‘hooked’ is the least I can say. Path to here wasn’t straight-forward though. It is not like one day I bit the pill and started watching K-Dramas. It was a very gradual transition, I’d say. I think it started with Suits. I started watching Suits because I wanted to give the legal drama genre another chance. We originally watched a couple of seasons of “The Good Wife” – a series I found increasingly hypocritic and useless. Suits, on the other hand, turned out very delightful. It carefully morphed from a monotonous legal drama into a very engaging relationship drama. The character sketches of Louis and Harvey really matured through the series and at S9, I was wanting a lot more. ...

On Wunderbar films

Another day I never dreamt would happen – I actually am beginning to believe Dhanush might be one of the better movie makers out there. Thinking about it, absolutely every movie made by his Wunderbar Films has turned out to be brilliant and/or entertaining. For instance, even the lighter ones like Maari or Kaaki Sattai were absolutely entertaining. Kaaki sattai even had a good premise. Of course, Kaakka Muttai and 3 are perhaps the best movies to have come under this belt. Ethir neechal and VIP were both entertaining and had a decent story to tell. ...

iPhone 6 among other things

After a lot of deliberation, discussions, depressions, planning and meticulous budgeting, Noni convinced me to just stfu and pick up that damn device. So we did just that. I am still a little unsure whether I like the feel of the device. I love my iPhone 5 because the form factor is just about perfect for me. This is my first 4.7″ device in the last 4-5 years that I have held a smartphone. Way too old for tech? Maybe. ...

Bangalore Days

A lot of people have been recommending Malayalam movies to me. I used to catch a few Malalayalam movies on DD long time back. They usually had good stories but were a drag. You know, at that teens you really want action (both kinds, yes). And then there is the stigma of watching a Malayalam movie as a teen. It can’t do you much good. I still managed to catch a few very good ones and mostly from the Mammotty stable – Iyer the great, New Delhi, Oru CBI Diary Kurippu etc. Of course, if I think a bit more I can locate from other major heroes as well. What always attracted me to their movies is their no nonsense movie making, again the stigma is what kept me away 🙂 ...

Cabbie – Comedian

I was in Chennai last week. I had to go out someplace and I had hired a cab since I am not very keen in driving in Chennai any more. It was a 40 minute drive one way and it was a pretty hot day. The cabbie was the only relief all along the drive although both my wife and my mom found him a tad too annoying. The man was naturally gifted at talking. He spoke a naturally funny dialect of tamil. And he picked up topics from the road. Every street name, car, building, office space that we cross, he had something to quip. Some where just a rant or a while, but a lot many were just good humor. It is clear that he doesn’t mind. That’s like the best stand up comedy show I have been in – not that I have been in a lot. I listen to them a lot. ...

On Absurdity…

Strange as it may seem, I seem to have fun with absurdity. Everybody does, to some extent. But sometimes I have fun at somethings that don’t even catch the attention of my wife. To the extent she now believes I am a tad weird in this topic. For instance, a few of these one liners gets me to laugh every single time! Most people are immune to it after the second or third times! ...

Konjam Nadinga Boss!

Annoying, hilarious or however else you look at it, this program is perhaps the best thing a movie based channel ever came up with. For once, it makes us realize how difficult it is to deliver a dialogue with appropriate tonal variations and timing, body language even if the entire picture is not clear. So what if it took a 100 takes, most of us would still find it difficult. ...
